about

The score to the 5th episode of Toonwerks' "Wonders of the Universe."

I feel lucky to have had a chance to write such ambitious music for an even more ambitious episode—of an already ambitious series created by Mark Schneider, Joseph Blanchette, Casey McDonald, and Christopher Boe, to boot!

I was at first asked by Casey to create a new theme for Wonders. When first creating the series, they had envisioned a cheesy, swinging 1960s sci-fi style orchestral theme. Drawing inspiration from numerous '60s TV show themes, from Alexander Courage's "Star Trek" to John Williams's "Land of the Giants," I took to writing something that I believe to fit the bill.

From there I was tasked with scoring the episode. Though there are quite a few minor motifs peppered throughout, the central identifying theme has to be the alien's, Neigel. (Liberally inspired by Jerry Goldsmith's own "Alien" theme from 1979.) To contrast, director Mark Schneider wanted to include Georges Bizet's "Habanera" from the opera "Carmen," to help portray the character Nova's long, dragging days.

In the showdown between the two characters, a duel plays out in the music also, pitting Bizet's "Habanera" against my own alien thematic content. Is it any surprise the better composer wins?

I hope you enjoy the music! You can view the full episode here:
